Oil / Water Interceptors / Separators
![]() |
Our oil-water interceptors and separators work to protect the environment by intercepting hydrocarbons and suspended solid in storm water run-off before it can discharge into a local water or sewer system. We offer two styles of oil–water separators; API (American Petroleum Institute) and CPS (Coalescing Plate System). Both these systems come in a range of sizes and can be customized to suit your needs. |
API oil interceptors use a series of baffles and retention time to allow oils (hydrocarbons) to separate. This type is the most common and delivers efficiency between 50 to 60% removal of immiscible oil. Also, most A.E. Concrete (API) oil interceptor designs can easily be up-graded to a CPS unit at a later time. This gives you some assurance that if the regulations and discharge requirements change, our oil interceptor product can meet the required specification.
CPS oil separator uses an API baffle design with the addition of Facet M-Paks®. These coalescing plates can deliver an efficiency of between 90 to 95% removal of immiscible oil and can reduce the required size of the tank in comparison to the API design. A.E. Concrete is the O.E.M. for the Facet International Coalescing M-Paks®.
Facet M-Pak – Coalescing Plates
Introducing an oil/water separator so smart, it even cleans up after itself! Whether you’re dealing with rainwater run-off, groundwater remediation, coolant tramp oil removal, or oil and grease removal from wash down and maintenance areas, Facet MPak oil/water separators will meet your needs ranging in size from 1 gpm to as large as 20,000 gpm – or larger as required. As the oil/water/solids mixture travels through the plates, oil rises to the top and solids drop to the bottom through dedicated surfaces and weep holes. Plate supports at the bottom allow for easy removal of the solids that collect beneath the plates. And, because of the steep angles and short travel distances, oils and solids are quickly released, making the media virtually self-cleaning. Facet M – Pak coalescing plates are manufactured by Facet International.
Key Benefits:- Self-cleaning.
- Modular construction for easy installation in existing tanks, pits and vaults.
- Reduces commingling of oil and solids - dedicated surfaces and weep holes.
Basic Operation – API Style
The oil water mixture enters the chamber through the inlet T-Pipe at the bottom of the first compartment. Any large suspended solids will settle to the bottom and are contained by the Grit Baffle (first baffle). As the mixture flows to and through the second compartment the Grit baffle aides the Oil droplets in their upward track to the surface. The Oil Dam Baffle (second baffle) retains the oil while the clean water travels down and under the oil dam baffle and over the Water Height Baffle (Last Baffle). Once in the third compartment the clean water once again flows down to the bottom of the chamber where it discharges through the outlet T-Pipe. |

Basic Operation – CPS Style
A CPS oil separator uses an API baffle design with the addition of Facet M-Paks® Coalescing Plates. The operation of the chamber is therefore similar in design. The M-Paks® are placed between the Grit Baffle (first baffle) and the Oil Dam Baffle (second baffle). Once the oil water / suspended solids mixture travels past the grit baffle, it passes through the M-Paks® which attract oil droplets to the underside of the plate and discharge the suspended solids to the bottom of the tank. As the distance between plates is small, larger oil droplets form quickly and rise to the surface faster through the vertical weep holes. Also, solid particles have less distance to settle and drop to the bottom of the M-Paks® through alternate weep holes. The clean water then proceeds through the other two baffles as listed above.
Regular inspections of the oil interceptor / separator are recommended in order to determine a proper maintenance period and if required, a vacuum truck is needed to clean out the grit and oil. For the Recommended Oil Interceptor Maintenance Procedures, click here.
For more information or to order an AE Oil-Water Interceptor / Separator please contact us. To prepare a quotation, there are four main criteria we required;
- Flowrate (ie. USGPM or CMS)
- Application (ie. Refuelling Station)
- Desired Effluent at Discharge (ie. <15 PPM)
- Pipe Size and Elevations: Rim, Inlet & Outlet
For a complete list of information required, please download our Application Data Sheet.

PVC T-Pipes
We suggest the OWS units incorporate the use of the PVC T-Pipe assemblies for the following reasons:
- Prevents the surcharge of hydrocarbons backing up into the pipe system.
- Assists in diverting the flow down into the tank creating quiescent conditions.
- Allows for accurate water (grab) sampling on the inlet and outlet flows.
- Better design as opposed to the 90 elbow which is subject to a siphoning issue.
- Allows for the cleanest water in the tank to be discharged on the outlet side of tank.
Enquip Oil Stop Valve
Some of the most resourceful equipment comes in the simplest packages to accomplish some of the most complex tasks. The Flo Stop Valve by Enquip OSV is a perfect example. Only one moving part, scientifically engineered and tested under all types of conditions and applications, gives you worry-free operation. The Flo Stop Valve works automatically; no operator adjustments or maintenance is required.
The Flo Stop Valve is a proven pollution control device. It can quickly and easily be applied to many applications and numerous configurations involving spill protection or liquid separation. The Flo Stop Valve prevents specified liquids from leaving a containment area or storage vessel. It’s that simple. The Flo Stop Valve works with any type of atmospheric vessel where the release of "heavy" liquid and retention of a "lighter" liquid is desirable. Storm drains may be subjected to possible contamination from hydrocarbons can be retrofitted with the Gravity Flo Stop Valve so that no contaminates are released downstream.
To assure proper operation of the Flo Stop Valve, the specific gravities of any two immiscible liquids should have a minimum 2% (two percent) weight differential. The heavier phase flows unrestricted through the valve as the valve shut-off mechanism floats above the flow channels. The float is designed and weighted to the specific gravity of the lighter liquid. As the last of the heavy liquid passes through the valve, the float sinks and cuts off the flow through the valve thereby assuring retention of the lighter liquid.
Gravity Flo Stop Valves are available in various retrofit configurations for ease of field installation. It is an economical alternative to an oil monitoring system. Its self cleaning feature makes the unit almost maintenance free. And, because the unit opens and closes automatically, it is a true "hands-off" valve for years of trouble-free operation. The Flo Stop Valve is an economical alternative to an oil monitoring system. It assures protection of the environment from contamination as well as prevents the loss of valuable product through human error.
Key Benefits:
- Scientifically engineered.
- Proven control device.
- Opens and closes automatically for hands-off operation.
- Assures protection of the environment from contamination and prevents loss of valuable product.
Headwalls
![]() |
AE Concrete has a wide range of headwalls designed to control the flow on a road crossing or a discharge point on a typical storm water system. Our wide range of headwalls and related products are manufactured to Ministry of Transportation (MoT) & Master Municipal Contract Documents (MMCD) specifications. |
They come ready to install and include many optional items. Some of these items include: galvanized handrails, custom designed energy dissipaters, flap gates and galvanized grillages.
